I would HATE for the audience to clap half-way through a performance thinking it was finished… It happened to me once when an EXAMINER stopped me half-way through a Debussy piano piece, and then apologised! Ahh biggest fear!

…to everyone who messaged me with regard to my Music Psychology post! You have helped me so much! I will send personal thank you’s too, but only when I’ve finished collating all your answers! (There were quite a few!)

For those wondering, the from the feedback I got, the vast majority of you do move whilst performing, but are also discouraged from so… From an audience’s point of view, most of you don’t mind a bit of movement, however you’re all consistent when you say too much movement can be distracting and unnecessary!

Once again, thank you so much! You guys are so awesome!

“The first eight measures of Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto in A Major (K. 622), second movement, were used. The excerpt (Figure 1) was chosen for its high expressive content and the fact that it is well known. All clarinetists performed on an A clarinet. All clarinetists were familiar with the excerpt before participating. An active motion capture system (NDI Optotrak Certus) measured the clarinetists’ movements at a 250 Hz sampling rate. Markers were placed on each fingernail tip of the clarinetists’ hands and on the clarinet: one marker on the barrel (below the mouthpiece), one centered just above the bell, and two on the bell. These markers provided information about the orientation of the clarinet. An AKG C414 B-XLS standing microphone, as well as a microphone integrated into the clarinet barrel, recorded the audio at 44.1 kHz.”

I’m writing a Music Psychology paper on “Movement through musical performance” - basically about how/why we do/don’t move about whilst performing.

Do you move a lot whilst performing? If so, why? Are you concious of these movements? Are you discouraged it?

Or are you the opposite: do you keep movement to a minimum, and are you fully aware of this?

From an audience point of view, is movement through performance a distraction, or simply an enhancement to the recital you are attending?

I would be forever grateful if you could take the time to perhaps share your views by writing me a Tumblr message. If possible, it would be really helpful to include the region of the world you come from, as well as your age, gender, and what instrument you play!
